A cloudy swimming pool is one of the most common problems pool owners face — and one of the most misdiagnosed. The instinct is to dump in more chlorine and run the filter longer. Sometimes that works. Often it doesn’t, because cloudy water has multiple possible causes, and the right fix depends entirely on which one you’re dealing with.
This guide breaks down why pools go cloudy, how to accurately diagnose the cause in your specific pool, and what to do about it — including when a DIY approach will resolve the problem and when it’s time to call a professional.
Cloudy water isn’t a single problem — it’s a symptom. The haziness you see is caused by microscopic particles suspended in the water that are too small to be caught by your filter or too numerous for your sanitizer to handle. Understanding what those particles are tells you what to do about them.
There are five main categories of cause, and it’s entirely possible for more than one to be present at the same time.
Low free chlorine is the most common cause of cloudy pool water. When your sanitizer level drops, organic matter — bacteria, algae spores, body oils, sunscreen, urine, sweat — accumulates faster than it can be oxidized. The result is a buildup of combined chlorine (chloramines) and organic waste that clouds the water and produces that familiar chemical smell.

A pool with early algae contamination will often show: chlorine that drops unusually fast between treatments, a slight green or grey tint to the water, slightly elevated phosphate levels, and water that looks murky despite normal filter pressure and adequate chlorine readings.

Step 1: Test your water thoroughly. A basic test strip isn’t sufficient for diagnosing cloudiness. Use a good liquid test kit or take a water sample to a pool supply store for full analysis. You need readings for: free chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid. If possible, also test phosphates.
Step 2: Look at the color of the cloudiness. White or grey cloudiness typically points to calcium/chemistry issues or fine particulate matter. Green or green-tinged cloudiness points to algae. Yellow or brown cloudiness often indicates organic debris load or high iron/manganese content.
Step 3: Check your filter pressure. Is it at normal operating pressure or elevated? Elevated pressure confirms filtration as a contributing factor.
Step 4: Check your pump run time. Is the pump running long enough to turn over your pool’s volume at least once daily?
Step 5: Think about recent events. Has there been heavy rain? A pool party? Nearby landscaping? These point to load-based causes.
Once you’ve gathered this information, the cause is usually clear — and in many cases, it’s a combination of two or three factors working together.
Shock the pool. Pool shock — a high-dose chlorine treatment — oxidizes accumulated organic waste, kills early algae, and resets your sanitizer baseline. Use a calcium hypochlorite shock at the dose recommended for your pool volume, applied in the evening (UV breaks down unprotected chlorine rapidly in direct sunlight).
After shocking: run the filter continuously for at least 24 hours. Test chlorine levels before allowing swimming — wait until free chlorine drops back below 5 ppm.
If cloudiness persists after shocking despite adequate chlorine readings, cyanuric acid level and pH are the next things to investigate. High CYA causing chlorine lock won’t respond to more shock — it requires dilution.
For high cyanuric acid: The only remedy is partial draining (typically 1/3 to 1/2 the pool volume) and refilling with fresh water. Retest after refilling and rebalance chemistry before resuming normal treatment.
Adjust chemistry in this order — sequence matters:
Allow 24–48 hours of filtration after chemistry adjustment before evaluating results. Chemistry cloudiness doesn’t clear immediately — the particles need time to either dissolve back into solution or be captured by the filter.
If filter pressure is elevated: Clean or backwash the filter before anything else. You cannot filter out cloudiness with a clogged filter, and running a struggling filter shortens equipment life. For cartridge filters, remove and hose down the element. For sand or DE filters, backwash per manufacturer instructions. After cleaning, note the new baseline pressure so you have a reference point going forward.
If the pump isn’t running enough: Increase daily run time to at minimum 8 hours; for a cloudy pool in recovery, run it continuously (24 hours) until clarity returns. Many pool owners significantly underestimate the run time required to maintain clarity, especially during hot weather or after heavy use.
If the filter appears to be bypassing: Inspect the multiport valve and its O-rings. A worn or cracked valve seat allows water to short-circuit filtration entirely. This is a repair item — contact a pool service professional if the valve needs rebuilding or replacement.
Adding a pool clarifier: A clarifier is a polymer-based coagulant that causes fine suspended particles to clump together into larger aggregates that your filter can capture. It’s a useful tool when chemistry is balanced and the filter is working but cloudiness is persisting from fine particulate matter. Follow dosage instructions carefully — overdosing a clarifier can actually worsen cloudiness. Add it with the filter running and allow 24–48 hours.
Flocculant (pool floc): For severe cloudiness that isn’t responding to standard treatment, a flocculant can be used. Unlike a clarifier (which helps the filter capture particles), a floc causes particles to clump and sink rapidly to the pool floor, where they’re vacuumed out directly. This requires vacuuming to waste (bypassing the filter) to remove the settled material — if you vacuum it through the filter it simply re-suspends. Floc is a more aggressive tool and typically not necessary for standard cloudiness — it’s best used for severe cases or when filtration capacity is limited.
Early algae requires a more aggressive approach than standard cloudiness treatment:

Maintain chlorine levels consistently. Don’t let free chlorine drop below 1 ppm. In outdoor pools during summer, this may require more frequent additions or a switch to a slower-dissolving stabilized chlorine product if you’re currently using faster-dissolving options.
Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 at all times. This is the single parameter that most affects chlorine effectiveness and overall water balance. A pool with consistently well-managed pH will use less chlorine, experience fewer algae problems, and maintain clarity more easily.
Run your pump long enough. Eight hours per day is a reasonable minimum for most pools; more during peak heat or heavy use periods. An undersized pump run time is one of the most common — and most easily corrected — causes of chronic cloudiness.
Clean your filter regularly. Don’t wait for pressure to spike — backwash sand and DE filters on a schedule and inspect cartridge filter elements monthly. A clean filter working at full capacity is one of the best defenses against cloudy water.
Shock weekly or bi-weekly during heavy use periods. A maintenance shock — at a lower dose than a remediation shock — oxidizes organic waste and chloramines before they accumulate to the point of causing cloudiness. Many pool professionals recommend shocking as a routine preventive measure rather than waiting for a problem.
Manage phosphate levels. Phosphates don’t cloud the water directly, but they fuel algae growth that does. Sources include rain runoff, certain pool chemicals, leaf debris, and some municipal water supplies. A phosphate remover used periodically — particularly heading into warm-weather season — reduces the fuel supply for algae blooms.

It depends on the cause, but generally: no, you should not swim in a noticeably cloudy pool. Cloudiness indicates either inadequate sanitizer, chemistry imbalance, algae contamination, or significant debris load — any of which can represent a health risk. Specifically, the CDC advises that you should not swim in water where you cannot see the bottom, both for health reasons and because reduced visibility creates a drowning risk — a lifeguard cannot see a struggling swimmer in murky water. Color and smell are your first clues. Algae-related cloudiness has a greenish, yellowish, or greyish tint and often comes with a musty or earthy smell. Test phosphate levels — elevated phosphates alongside low chlorine and warm water temperatures strongly suggest algae. Chemistry-only cloudiness typically occurs in pools with otherwise good maintenance history after a specific triggering event like heavy rain or significant water chemistry change.
